Alabama-based custom metal fabricator Southern Metal Fabricators, Inc. has been certified according to the updated Canadian Standards Association’s (CSA) Standard W47.1 (Division 2) governing the fusion welding of steel. This allows Southern Metal Fabricators to custom fabricate projects that incorporate structural steel components, such as bulk oil tanks, for Canadian and other companies who abide by the stringent CSA welding standards.
Achieving the CSA certification followed the following process: Two Southern Metal Fabricator employees were dispatched to Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) training for classroom training sessions. Once they completed the course, they were classified as approved welding inspectors and pre-qualified other welding staff at Southern Metal Fabricators. Pre-qualified welders were then qualified by an official CWB welding inspector during one of their semiannual visits to Southern Metal Fabricators’ headquarters in Albertville, Ala.
While visiting Southern Metal Fabricators, the CWB representative also reviewed the custom metal fabricator’s welding procedures, determining that Southern Metal Fabricators meets the CSA standards and granting it a CSA 47.1 fusion welding of steel company certification.
“This is a big moment for Southern Metal Fabricators,” said Bud Weed, Sales Manager at Southern Metal Fabricators. “Our welding procedures have always followed CSA codes, but becoming officially certified will be a public recognition of this fact and will help us better serve our customers.”
